A job offer is a genuine offer of employment from a legitimate Canadian employer.

A temporary job offer which is an offer made for a specific period of time – six months, nine months, one year, etc… Applicants can begin working only after they receive a Temporary Work Permit in most cases.


A permanent job offer which is an offer made for an indeterminate period of time. Individuals can only begin working after they receive a Canada Immigration Visa.

A Canadian employer wishes to employ a foreign worker in Canada, he must obtain authorization Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). The Canadian employer must show that employing a foreign worker will not have a negative impact on the Canadian labour market, and there is no Canadian citizen or permanent resident available to fill the position currently.  Typically, it is accomplished by advertising the position on several medias for job offers for at least one month to demonstrate that there was no suitable Canadian for the job. 

An applicant may apply for a Temporary Work Permit on its own or in combination with an application for a Canada Immigration Visa. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC, formerly CIC) recognizes an applicant desires to work in Canada temporarily and thereafter reside and work in Canada permanently.

If you are applying under a work permit stream that requires an LMIA, you need to 

submit the following documents to IRCC as part of your work permit application:


  1. a job offer letter

  2. employment contract

  3. a copy of the LMIA

  4. the LMIA number


All applicants need to demonstrate they will leave Canada when their work permit expires, they have enough money to financially support themselves in Canada.

When an applicant applies for Under Express Entry, who is successfully in obtaining a job offer by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), will be awarded an additional 50 or 200 points under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).  


The applicant is more likely to be issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence at a subsequence draw from the pool that fast-tracking the immigration process.

Most work permit applications are processed and issued within a matter of days or weeks, depending on whether or not a medical examination is required and the workload at the particular visa office to which the application was submitted.
